FSSAI Intensifies Efforts Against Obesity and Misleading Food Claims
FSSAI tightened Efforts Against Obesity and Misleading Food Claims
In a concerted move to address public health concerns, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is amplifying its initiatives to combat obesity and curb misleading food advertising. These efforts align with the Prime Minister’s call for a healthier India and aim to promote better dietary habits and food safety standards across the nation.
Combating Obesity: A National Priority
During the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, in New Delhi, the FSSAI urged States and Union Territories to intensify efforts to tackle obesity and reduce oil consumption by 10%. The authority emphasized the importance of public awareness and localized initiatives, advocating for healthier lifestyles and dietary changes. Schools were encouraged to establish ‘sugar boards’ to monitor and limit sugar intake among children. Additionally, the FSSAI reaffirmed its support for the ‘Eat Right India’ movement, aiming to increase access to safer food choices and promote overall food safety standards.
In a parallel effort to ensure transparency and protect consumers, the FSSAI has issued directives to food business operators (FBOs) to remove misleading claims such as ‘100% natural’ or ‘100% fruit juice’ from product labels and advertisements. The authority noted that such claims can be deceptive if not backed by verifiable evidence and may convey a false sense of absolute purity or superiority. The FSSAI emphasized that all claims made must comply with the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, which should be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated.
This crackdown includes the removal of ‘100% fruit juice’ claims from reconstituted fruit juices, which often contain significant amounts of water alongside fruit concentrates or pulp. The FSSAI clarified that numerical expressions like ‘100%’ are not permitted under the current regulatory framework for such products.
A Comprehensive Approach to Public Health
The FSSAI’s initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to improving the nation’s health landscape. By addressing both obesity and misleading food advertising, the authority aims to create an environment where consumers can make informed choices about their dietary habits. These efforts are crucial in building a healthier India and ensuring that food products meet the highest standards of safety and transparency.
