Madurai Corporation Replaces 1,200 Streetlights Monthly for Safer Roads & Energy Savings

Madurai Corporation ramps up its public lighting upgrades, replacing 1,200 streetlights each month and investing ₹7.5 crore in new LEDs to boost safety and sustainability.

Lighting Up Madurai: City Replaces 1,200 Streetlights Monthly to Boost Road Safety and Energy Efficiency

In a bright leap toward modern urban infrastructure, the Madurai Corporation has stepped up efforts to improve night-time visibility and safety by replacing around 1,200 streetlights every month. This translates to nearly 2% of the city’s total stock of 61,000 streetlights, ensuring a consistent rotation of repair and upgrades.

Corporation CommissionerMs. Chitra Vijayan shared that the initiative is being closely monitored to respond to public complaints and ensure well-lit streets—critical for both road safety and crime prevention.

Lighting Up Neglected Neighborhoods

The city’s western zone and newly developed residential extensions have often remained in the dark—literally. Despite ongoing efforts, some areas still face lengthy wait times for faulty lights to be fixed. The reasons include electrical faults, voltage fluctuations, and dependency on the Electricity Board for troubleshooting.

To resolve persistent grievances, the Corporation plans to install 3,800 new LED streetlights at a cost of ₹7.5 crore, prioritizing high-traffic and dimly lit areas.

The Energy-Efficiency Edge

LED technology brings a significant energy advantage. Nationally, LED replacements have slashed energy use by 25% to 60% under India’s Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP). Madurai already saw a ₹22 lakh monthly saving after replacing 18,000 tubelights with 20-watt LEDs.

With monthly upgrades, the city is poised to:
– Cut electricity use in half over time
– Slash maintenance costs thanks to longer LED life
– Reduce carbon emissions and energy waste

Hurdles in the Way

Despite progress, Madurai faces multiple challenges in maintaining its lighting infrastructure:

     – Contract Gaps: Periods where no active maintenance contracts led to widespread outages
     – Low Light Intensity: Existing 20-watt LEDs don’t offer strong enough illumination
     – Delayed Repairs: Hundreds of unresolved complaints online speak to slow response times
     – Supply Chain Bottlenecks: Inadequate parts in some wards slow down repair crews
     – Adverse Weather: Rain and flooding delay streetlight fixes due to access and wiring complications

To combat these, the Corporation is issuing new tenders, stocking more parts, and focusing on better coverage in under-lit zones.

Towards a Greener Madurai

Madurai’s approach not only improves night-time navigation but also aligns with India’s broader commitment to energy efficiency. Better public lighting reduces reliance on fossil fuel-generated electricity, lowers emissions, and allows local governments to reallocate saved funds to healthcare, sanitation, and education.
