Madurai Hosts Three-Day Food Festival to Showcase Culinary Heritage
In a vibrant celebration of local cuisine and culture, Madurai Corporation organized a three-day Food Festival from July 11 to 13, aimed at promoting the city’s rich culinary traditions. The event, held at the Vehicle Depot near Tamukkam Knowledge Park, is part of the city’s larger vision to be recognized as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
The festival was inaugurated by Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth, who lit the ceremonial lamp and officially opened the event to the public. With a focus on local flavors, food tourism, and community engagement, the festival drew large crowds of food enthusiasts, families, and tourists alike.
Celebrating Madurai’s Culinary Diversity
The event featured over 21 food stalls, offering a variety of traditional and modern dishes. Local restaurants, catering services, and culinary entrepreneurs participated, presenting signature items from South Tamil Nadu’s cuisine. While festival-goers enjoyed everything from parottas to payasam, many expressed hope for the inclusion of more authentic street vendors in future editions.
“The event is well-organised, but most stalls are run by commercial outlets. We expected to see more traditional and home-style foods,” said Selva Rani, a Madurai resident.
Despite such feedback, the festival was widely appreciated for its cultural vibrancy, especially the performances by local school students, which added a festive flair and drew in younger audiences.
Boosting Culinary Tourism in Madurai
Madurai has witnessed a significant uptick in tourism, particularly culinary tourism. Recent reports revealed that foreign tourist arrivals increased from around 57,500 in 2023 to nearly 98,800 in 2024. The Food Festival is aligned with this growing interest, offering tourists and locals an opportunity to explore Madurai’s food scene in one curated space.
Culinary experts have long argued that the city’s famed dishes—kari dosai, mutton biryani, jigarthanda, and a wide range of millet-based meals—deserve global attention. Events like this are designed to place Madurai on the international gastronomic map, especially as plans move forward to create a dedicated food street near Mattuthavani.

Madurai’s Path to Becoming a City of Gastronomy
The push toward gaining UNESCO recognition is not just about food—it’s about preserving intangible heritage, boosting local economies, and promoting sustainable tourism. Events like this reinforce the city’s strengths in these areas and reflect its readiness to engage with global cultural networks.
According to municipal sources, this festival is one of many events planned as part of Madurai’s gastronomic branding strategy, which includes digital campaigns, food mapping, and culinary storytelling through partnerships with local influencers and historians.
