Priest & Odhuvar Training Admissions Open at Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple
Madurai, known as the cultural and spiritual heart of Tamil Nadu, continues its commitment to preserving temple traditions. Today, the iconic Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple has opened admissions for its 2025–26 priest (archakar) and odhuvar training programs.
These courses are conducted under the supervision of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department. They aim to prepare the next generation to serve in Tamil Nadu’s historic temples while carrying forward centuries-old practices.
The Archakar Course is a one-year program that trains students in temple rituals, puja practices, and religious customs.
The Odhuvar Course is a three-year program designed for those who wish to specialize in devotional singing and recitation of Thevaram and Thiruvachakam hymns.
Young aspirants aged 14 to 24 years, with a minimum qualification of Class VIII, are eligible to apply. The temple ensures that no student faces financial barriers—providing free accommodation, food, medical facilities, and books. In addition, each trainee receives a monthly stipend of ₹10,000, making the program both supportive and inclusive.
Beyond training, the initiative highlights Madurai’s role in safeguarding cultural identity. Many past graduates now serve in temples across Tamil Nadu, strengthening the spiritual fabric of communities. However, demands continue for the government to provide secure employment opportunities for trained candidates, ensuring their long-term service in temple traditions.
The opening of admissions is more than just an educational drive—it represents Madurai’s effort to blend tradition with opportunity, giving today’s youth a chance to become tomorrow’s cultural custodians.
