Madurai Corporation to Hold Indirect Elections on Sept 24 to Fill Key Chairperson Posts
Madurai Corporation sets indirect elections for Sept 24 to fill vacant chairperson roles in zoning, finance, and town planning committees.
The State Election Commission of Tamil Nadu has issued a gazette notification initiating indirect elections to fill several vacant chairperson posts within Madurai Corporation, including the zonal chairpersons and members overseeing taxation, finance, and town planning committees. The positions have been vacant since July, following resignations amid investigations into a property tax irregularity.
Officials say notices for the elections will be served by September 16, and the statutory period for nominations runs from September 17 to 23. Council meetings are scheduled for the formal election on September 24 under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998 and related state rules.
This move is seen by civic watchers as critical to restoring administrative functionality, especially in committees that oversee budgeting, taxation, and regulation.
