Madurai to get Two New Police Stations

In a move to improve law enforcement in Madurai, the city will soon have two new police stations—Chinthamani and Madakulam. The new units will be created by reorganizing the existing Keerathurai and SS Colony jurisdictions. This decision, announced by CM MK Stalin and formalized by the DGP’s directive, aims to enhance administrative efficiency and public safety. A separate police station is also planned for Keezhadi in Sivaganga.

Madurai, Tamil Nadu – In a significant move to enhance local law enforcement and administrative efficiency, the Madurai city police will soon see the addition of two new police stations at Chinthamani and Madakulam. With this development, the total number of police stations in the city will rise to 25, marking a milestone in the region’s policing infrastructure.

The announcement was originally made by Chief Minister MK Stalin during a recent legislative assembly session and has now been formally enacted through an order issued by the Director-General of Police (DGP) on September 16.

According to the DGP’s directive, district and city-level police authorities have been instructed to identify and report suitable land for constructing the new buildings. These new stations are expected to play a crucial role in streamlining police operations and improving response times in the region.

The restructuring is particularly aimed at easing the administrative burden of Keerathurai and SS Colony police stations—two of the largest and most overburdened jurisdictions in the city. The new Chinthamani police station will be carved out of Keerathurai’s jurisdiction, while Madakulam will be formed from parts of the SS Colony area.

A senior police official noted, “These changes will allow us to serve the public more efficiently, especially in high-density areas. The restructuring is long overdue.”

Additionally, beyond Madurai city limits, Keezhadi—a historically significant town in Sivaganga district—will also receive a dedicated police station. Until now, Keezhadi fell under the jurisdiction of Thirupuvanam police station and operated only a police outpost situated inside the Keezhadi Museum Campus. The new full-fledged station will give the locality greater policing autonomy and security presence.

The expansion of police infrastructure aligns with the state’s broader commitment to improving public safety and administrative decentralization. Residents and local leaders have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the new stations will lead to faster grievance redressal and greater police visibility.
