Sports Infrastructure and Inter-College Sports in Madurai

1. Sports Infrastructure in Madurai: New Projects & Upgrades

Madurai is witnessing a new wave of sports development with several major infrastructure projects taking shape across the city. These initiatives aim to encourage young talent, promote inclusivity, and prepare Madurai to host larger tournaments in the coming years.

Key Infrastructure Projects:

SDAT Campus Facelift – The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) campus in Madurai is receiving a major revamp worth ₹20 crore. The plan includes a new swimming pool with diving facilities and an upgraded gym, expected to be completed by early 2026.

Hockey Stadium Upgrade – Ahead of the upcoming FIH Men’s Junior World Cup, Madurai’s hockey stadium is being modernized with Olympic-standard turf and a 2,000-seat viewing gallery, at an estimated cost of ₹9.47 crore.

Para Sports Facility – A first-of-its-kind para sports complex is being developed at the District Sports Complex on Race Course Road. The 4,000 sq m facility will feature accessible courts, anti-skid flooring, and wheelchair-friendly amenities to support differently-abled athletes.

Olympic Academy Project – A ₹6 crore Olympic Academy is under construction at the SDAT/MGR Stadium complex, adding improved indoor courts, a modern gym, and athlete training areas.

Mini Stadiums in Rural Areas – Under the Chief Minister’s Mini Stadium Scheme, multiple rural zones including Melur are getting new sports hubs costing around ₹3 crore each. These aim to make sports accessible to youth beyond city limits.
