Calm in the Clouds: IndiGo Pilots Handle Windshield Crack on Madurai–Chennai Flight
A quiet Sunday morning flight from Madurai to Chennai gave passengers a moment of tension and relief all in one journey. What started as a routine takeoff ended as a story of quick thinking and calm professionalism, when a small crack appeared on the cockpit windshield of an IndiGo aircraft mid-flight.

A Usual Flight Takes an Unusual Turn
The flight, operating under IndiGo 6E service, took off from Madurai International Airport at around 8:10 a.m. The weather was clear, and the passengers settled comfortably for their short trip to Chennai, a journey that usually takes under an hour.
About halfway through the flight, as the plane began its gentle descent toward Chennai, the pilots noticed something unusual — a fine line forming on the right side of the windshield. Within moments, that thin line turned into a visible crack across the outer layer of the glass.
Though such cracks are rare, pilots know that even a minor defect in the cockpit area must be handled seriously. They immediately contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Chennai and requested an early landing clearance as a precaution.
Keeping Passengers Calm
Inside the cabin, most travelers had no idea what was happening in the cockpit. The crew stayed composed, offering water and snacks, continuing regular service so no one would worry. The captain then made a short announcement, saying the plane would land slightly ahead of schedule because of a technical observation.
Thanks to the clear coordination between the cockpit and ATC, the aircraft landed safely at 8:55 a.m. on Runway 25 at Chennai Airport. The landing was smooth, and only after arrival did passengers learn the real reason for the quick descent — a cracked windshield.
No Danger, No Injuries
After the aircraft parked safely at the terminal, engineers immediately examined the windshield. Their inspection confirmed that the crack was limited to the outer glass layer, leaving the inner layers fully intact.
In simple terms, there was no danger to the cabin pressure or passengers. The aircraft was grounded for maintenance, and the flight crew received appreciation from officials for their quick response and adherence to safety procedures.
IndiGo’s Official Statement
Later that day, IndiGo Airlines issued a public statement:
“A minor crack was observed on the outer windshield of flight 6E operating between Madurai and Chennai. Following standard operating procedures, the flight was given priority landing and arrived safely at Chennai. Passenger safety was never compromised.”
The airline arranged refreshments for passengers during the short delay and ensured that upcoming flights were unaffected by the temporary grounding.
Passengers Praise the Crew
Several passengers shared their gratitude on social media, commending the crew’s calmness. One passenger wrote, “The landing was so smooth, we had no idea there was any issue. The crew handled everything like professionals.”
Another said, “When we heard about the windshield crack later, it made us realize how skilled these pilots are. They stayed calm when most people would panic.”
Why Such Cracks Happen
Experts say aircraft windshields are made of multiple layers of high-strength glass and plastic. These layers are designed to resist air pressure, temperature changes, and even small bird impacts.
Sometimes, rapid temperature shifts or air pressure variations can cause minor cracks in the outer layer. Though rare, they’re not life-threatening when detected early. In such cases, pilots are trained to land immediately, ensuring maximum safety — just as this crew did.
Safety Above All
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started an investigation to confirm the cause of the damage. Early reports suggest that it could be a combination of temperature stress and altitude pressure.
Meanwhile, IndiGo engineers have already replaced the damaged windshield and cleared the aircraft for future operations. The airline emphasized that its first priority will always be passenger safety.
A Flight to Remember
For passengers, it was a journey that ended safely and smoothly — but one they won’t forget soon. It was a reminder that even when unexpected problems arise thousands of feet above the
ground, skill, experience, and calm decision-making can keep everyone safe.
