Ezhil Koodal Beautification Drive: Madurai’s New Initiative Faces Early Setbacks

Published on

Madurai, a city steeped in culture and heritage, launched its Ezhil Koodal beautification campaign on September 1, 2025 with the promise of a cleaner and greener civic atmosphere. Spearheaded by the Madurai Corporation, the project set out to enhance the look and feel of important public spaces—particularly around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, East Chithirai Street, and other busy areas.

The initiative brought flower pots to over 300 locations, introduced hundreds of saplings, and distributed bamboo dustbins at transport hubs like Periyar and Mattuthavani bus stands. The intention was to combine aesthetics with community responsibility, encouraging citizens and visitors to treat public spaces with greater care.

But only weeks after its launch, the plan is showing strain. Several saplings have been left uncared for or damaged by cattle, while littering persists in crowded areas despite the new dustbins. In some spots, the choice of planting locations has made maintenance difficult.

Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan admitted that improvements are needed. Re-planting drives are being considered where saplings failed, and greater emphasis will be placed on awareness campaigns to involve the community. The Corporation also assured that upkeep and monitoring schedules will be tightened in the coming days.

Though not a festival or performance, Ezhil Koodal has cultural significance. It is an attempt to elevate Madurai’s identity as a historic and beautiful temple city, matching civic upkeep with its rich traditions. If maintained well, this project could redefine how residents and tourists experience Madurai’s most iconic areas.
