Officials Inspect Vandiyur Tank Revamp: A Step Toward New Community Space

Published on

Madurai is witnessing progress in creating more communal greens and leisure zones with the ongoing renovation at Vandiyur Tank. Today, the district monitoring officer, A. Arun Thamburaj, along with Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar, carried out a detailed inspection of the site and directed officials to speed up work.

The redevelopment is part of a significant ₹50 crore project (started in 2023) aimed at transforming Vandiyur Tank into a multipurpose recreational hub. The planned amenities include a floating jetty, boating facility, cycling and walking tracks, a yoga centre, meditation hall, children’s play area, a library, and a pantry.

Officials emphasized the importance of the tank not just for recreation but also for irrigation and ground water recharge, making the refurbishment vital to both lifestyle and environmental balance. Residents have expressed optimism, seeing the renovated tank as a space where families can spend evenings, fitness groups can meet, and local culture can bloom.

The inspection today ensures that the project stays on schedule, especially as the rainy season highlights infrastructure weaknesses like waterlogging and safety. With improved amenities and beautification, Vandiyur Tank is poised to become a key cultural landmark in Madurai’s public life.
