Cardiologist Warns: This Is the Most Dangerous Room in Your Home — And It’s Not the Kitchen

Cardiologist Dr. Dmitry Yaranov has raised alarm over the bathroom being a high-risk area, particularly for individuals with heart disease, arrhythmias, or those on blood pressure-lowering medications. In a recent Instagram video, he explained how straining during bowel movements can dangerously lower blood pressure and oxygen to the brain, leading to fainting or sudden death. He recommends preventive strategies like increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and managing constipation properly.

Sept 20, 2025 — When thinking of dangerous places around the house, most people imagine the kitchen or garage. However, a prominent cardiologist has pointed out an unexpected health hazard hiding in plain sight — the bathroom.

Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist with a growing social media following, recently issued a public warning on Instagram calling the bathroom “the most dangerous room in your house.” He explained that each year, thousands of people faint or even die while using the toilet — and the reasons are rooted in a physiological response that often goes unnoticed.

According to Dr. Yaranov, straining during a bowel movement, particularly when constipated, can trigger what’s known as the Valsalva maneuver — a forced exhalation against a closed airway. This maneuver significantly increases pressure in the chest, reduces blood flow to the heart, drops blood pressure, and can deprive the brain of oxygen.

“You think it’s the kitchen with knives or the garage with tools,” said Dr. Yaranov. “But for some people — it’s the bathroom.”

The risk is especially high for individuals with existing heart conditions such as heart disease, arrhythmias, or those taking high doses of heart failure medications that already reduce blood pressure. When combined with the strain of constipation, this can result in serious consequences — including loss of consciousness or even sudden death.

“If you have heart disease, arrhythmias, or you’re on high doses of heart failure meds… you’re at much higher risk,” Dr. Yaranov emphasized.

In light of these dangers, the cardiologist urges people not to ignore chronic constipation and to focus on prevention. His recommended strategies include increasing dietary fiber, maintaining hydration, engaging in regular physical activity, and using stool softeners when necessary.

“Fix the cause: fibre, hydration, daily movement, and stool softeners if needed,” he advised. “Don’t ignore chronic constipation — it’s not just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous.”
