In a move to modernize education and prepare students for a digital future, 72 government schools in Madurai district have begun offering Artificial Intelligence (AI) and coding classes for students in classes VI to IX. The initiative, launched under the Tamil Nadu government’s flagship “TNSPARK” program, was rolled out this week and is already drawing attention from parents, teachers, and educational experts.

Bringing Technology into Classrooms

The program aims to give government school students access to skills that are in high demand globally. AI and coding—once taught only in private schools or costly training centers—are now being introduced in government schools to bridge the learning gap between urban and rural students.

According to officials, the curriculum will include basic concepts of programming, logic building, and the application of AI in real-world situations. Students will also be trained to use online tools that can aid them in academics, project work, and creative problem-solving.

“This is not just about teaching computers,” said a senior education officer. We want our students to think differently, solve problems creatively, and become confident about technology. These classes will give them a head start in careers that require digital skills.
