🏃♀️ Revathi Veeramani – The Rising Sprinter
Revathi Veeramani comes from a small village near Madurai called Sakkimangalam. She started running in school sports without shoes, but her speed and willpower took her to great heights.
She represented India in the Tokyo Olympics in the 4×400m mixed relay. Revathi became the first woman athlete from Madurai district to reach the Olympics. Her journey shows that dreams can come true even from the smallest villages.
🏃♂️ Chinnain Thirugnanadurai – Madurai’s Olympic Star
Born in Usilampatti, Chinnain Thirugnanadurai made history as one of the few athletes from Madurai to compete at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
He was part of India’s 4×100m relay team and later won a bronze medal in the 2003 Afro-Asian Games. His success inspired many young athletes in the district to take up athletics seriously.
🏸 Jerlin Anika – The Champion Who Hears Through Her Heart
Jerlin Anika Jayaratchagan is a badminton player from Madurai who is hearing-impaired since she was two years old. Despite her challenges, she started playing badminton when she was just eight.
She won national-level medals and became a symbol of strength and courage for many differently-abled children. Jerlin proved that physical challenges cannot stop true talent.
🏐 A. Palanisamy – The “Black Panther” of Volleyball
From Kallampatti village near Melur, A. Palanisamy was one of India’s best volleyball players during the 1960s. Known for his powerful smashes, fans called him the “Black Panther” on the court.
He represented India in the 1962 Asian Games and received the Arjuna Award for his outstanding performance — one of the first volleyball players to earn that honor.
