Madurai, June 6 – In a significant step towards student safety, the Madurai district police introduced the “Police Akka” scheme across schools on Thursday, coinciding with the reopening of the academic year.

Under this initiative, police officers will visit schools every 10–15 days (at least once a month) to review safety measures and provide girl students with a platform to raise concerns about their safety.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • Awareness sessions held in four schools: OCPM Higher Secondary School, Ponmudiyar Girls High School, Kakkai Padiniyar Girls Higher Secondary School, and Balamandiram High School.
  • Topics covered: women’s safety, POCSO Act, road safety, responsible social media use, and the Police Assistant App.
  • Led by Inspector K. Indirani, head of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU).
  • Students educated on emergency helpline numbers: 100, 181, and 1098.
  • Introduction of Pink Patrol and Singappen special task force for women’s safety.
  • District Collector P. Akash distributed uniforms, notebooks, and materials at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Mahaboopalayam.
