Madurai’s Walls Get a Fresh Start: The Story of the “Ezhil Koodal” Clean-Up Drive
Madurai, the city of temples and traditions, is now writing a new story — a story about cleanliness and pride. The Madurai City Corporation has launched a special campaign called “Ezhil Koodal,” which means “Beautiful Madurai.” The goal? To make the city look neat and bright again by removing thousands of unauthorized posters and advertisements that have covered its walls for years.

A City Covered in Posters
If you’ve walked through Madurai recently — near Meenakshi Amman Temple, Anna Nagar, or Simmakkal — you’ve probably seen colorful posters everywhere. They advertise movies, political meetings, and even tuition classes. But behind those posters were old walls, once clean and full of history.
People had gotten so used to seeing posters that they forgot what the walls looked like without them. But the Madurai Corporation decided it was time for a change.
The Beginning of a Big Clean-Up
Last week, the Corporation started a massive poster removal drive in all 100 wards of the city. Over 400 workers were sent out early in the morning, carrying scrapers, brushes, and buckets of paint. Their mission was to peel off every poster stuck to public walls, poles, and bus shelters.
In just a few days, they managed to clean several main streets. Fines worth ₹11,000 were also collected from people and businesses who had pasted posters without permission.
Teamwork That Made a Difference
This wasn’t just the Corporation’s work — the people of Madurai joined too. Students, volunteers, and local residents came forward to help. Some painted over dirty walls, while others created awareness posters saying, “Stop Pasting, Start Caring.”
Commissioner K. Jeyachandran IAS said proudly, “A clean city is not just the government’s job. It’s everyone’s duty. When we keep Madurai clean, we show how much we love our city.”
Even children joined in by helping their parents clean their neighborhoods. It was truly a moment of togetherness.
Finding a Smarter Way to Advertise
The Corporation understands that posters are often used by small business owners to promote their shops, events, or classes. So, instead of banning everything, they plan to introduce digital display boards in popular areas.
This way, people can still advertise — but in a clean, organized, and legal manner. It’s a smart idea that keeps the city beautiful and helps local businesses at the same time.
Citizens Notice the Change
People across the city are already noticing the difference. Streets that once looked messy now look fresh and open. Auto drivers say passengers are complimenting the cleaner look. Street vendors share that their stalls look brighter without walls full of torn posters.
Residents in places like K.K. Nagar and Tallakulam say they finally feel proud walking through their neighborhoods. The sight of newly painted walls gives them hope that Madurai is changing for the better.
A Step Toward a Cleaner Future
Environmental experts have also praised the campaign. Many posters are made with plastic-based glue and colors that harm the environment. Removing them reduces pollution and keeps the air cleaner.
The Ezhil Koodal campaign is not a one-time effort. The Corporation plans to continue this drive regularly and involve schools and colleges to teach young people about civic responsibility. There are even ideas to turn cleaned walls into art spaces, where students can paint murals showing Madurai’s culture and history.
The Heart of the Story
Madurai has always been known for its temples, jasmine flowers, and delicious food. Now, it wants to be known for something more — cleanliness and civic pride.
The Ezhil Koodal campaign is not just about cleaning walls. It’s about changing habits, inspiring people, and reminding everyone that a city’s beauty lies in the care its people show.
Every poster peeled away tells a new story — the story of a city taking charge of its own beauty.
