Madurai Student to Represent India in International Disability Cricket Series in England.
G Vikash Ganeshkumar, a 21-year-old student from The Bethshan Higher Special School in Pasumalai, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has been selected to represent India in the upcoming International T20 Mixed Disability Cricket Series against England. The series is scheduled to be held in London from June 15 to July 14 , 2025. The series is organized by the Differently Abled Cricket Counsil of India (DCCI) .
Vikash’s journey into cricket began at the age of five when his mild intellectual disability was discovered. Initially enrolled in a mainstream school, he later joined The Bethshan Higher Special School, where teachers encouraged him to explore various sports. Although cricket was not part of the Special Olympics program at that time, Vikash’s passion for the sport remained unwavering. His dedication led him to participate in district-level competitions, eventually qualifying for state-level events in Perambur. It was during these competitions that the DCCI selectors took notice of his talent, requesting videos of his batting and bowling performances. These videos, combined with his impressive state-level performances, earned him a spot in the national team.
Currently undergoing intensive training in Jaipur, Vikash is set to fly to England to fulfill his dream of representing India on the international stage. His mother, Prema Latha – expressed immense pride and joy, stating that this achievement was the happiest moment of his … She recalled her initial doubts about the possibility of such an accomplishment but always believed in his potential. Vikash’s father, Ganesh Kumar, SI in-charge of dog squad of Madurai police, highlighted the family’s unwavering support and encouragement throughout his journey.
The International T20 Mixed Disability Cricket – marks a significant milestone in inclusive sports, bringing together players from physical, hearing, and intellectual disability backgrounds. Organized in partnership with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the series reflects India’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing opportunities for differently-abled athletes to showcase their talents on the global stage.
