As the unbearably heat continues increase in the city of Madurai, the demand for refreshing fruits like tender coconuts and ice apples has increased. Local traders are seeing a boom in sales, while customers are willing to pay higher prices for these cooling treats.

Ice apple vendors can be spotted on the streets, deftly slicing open the palm fruits to serve the eagerly waiting  customers from this present hot weather. Seasonal fruits like ice apples, which is also known as nongu (in tamil), are especially popular during the summer months, when they provide a much-needed relief from the heat.

The local resident, Saktivel, expressed his satisfaction with the ice apples he purchased, noting that despite the high prices, the demand remains strong. Tender coconut vendor Muthu explained that they have to source the stock from neighboring districts as local cultivators prioritize regular coconuts over tender ones, given the fluctuating prices of the latter.

The prices of tender coconuts have nearly doubled in recent weeks, now ranging from Rs 50 to 80 per piece depending on the size. Similarly, vendors are selling three to four palm fruits, each containing two to three ice apples, for Rs 50 based on their size.

With the heatwave showing no signs of subside, it seems that the demand for these cooling fruits will continue to rise. As residents seek ways to beat the heat, tender coconuts and ice apples may remain a popular choice for some time to come.
