“Epigraphy Museum to Enrich Madurai’s Lifestyle and Cultural Identity”

Madurai, September 3, 2025 – Madurai will soon see the addition of an Epigraphy Museum at the World Tamil Sangam, designed to highlight Tamil Nadu’s age-old history through inscriptions and coins. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during a recent archaeological gathering in the city.

The upcoming facility aims to preserve inscriptions that capture voices from the past and provide insights into early Tamil civilization. The minister emphasized that epigraphy is not just a branch of archaeology but a vital record of history that needs focused attention.

To strengthen research, the state has allocated funding for a national-level epigraphy conference in January 2026. Alongside this project, several heritage initiatives are in progress: the ₹18 crore open-air museum at Keeladi is nearing completion, while new museums are also being planned at Thirumalai Nayak Palace and Porpanaikkottai, which will feature artifacts from the Sangam era.

Once completed, the Epigraphy Museum will not only safeguard Tamil heritage but also encourage tourism, making Madurai a stronger cultural hub for both scholars and visitors.
