Tamil Nadu Finance Influencer V Harish Dies; Family Alleges Cyberbullying

Chennai: V Harish, a 27-year-old financial content creator from Puducherry who ran the YouTube channel Finance with Harish, was found dead at a villa near Muttukadu on Monday night, October 19, according to a report published by The New Indian Express. His family has alleged that he faced online harassment in the weeks before his death. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Harish had built an online audience through content related to finance and investments. His Instagram page and YouTube channel, which reportedly had around 1.5 million followers, were blocked in September. According to the report, he subsequently launched another YouTube channel, which was also reportedly blocked after being reported by users.

Family Alleges Online Harassment

Harish’s father, J. Vinayagam, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his son had been subjected to cyberbullying by another YouTuber. He claimed that the online content circulated about Harish caused him considerable mental distress.

According to the complaint, Harish had recorded a video before his death in which he allegedly referred to the YouTuber. The allegations made by the family are being examined as part of the police investigation.

The claims have not been established as findings of the investigation, and responsibility for Harish’s death has not been determined by the information available in the report.

Dispute Over Financial Advice and SEBI Registration

The incident followed a public dispute over Harish’s financial content and investment-related services.

In a video posted on October 18, another YouTuber allegedly accused Harish of offering financial advisory services without registration as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

The report said police were examining whether the online dispute and alleged harassment may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding Harish’s death. The allegations concerning financial advice and registration should be treated as claims, not as established findings of wrongdoing.

Police Investigation Underway

Police found Harish dead at the villa on Monday night. According to the report, no suicide note was recovered.

The Kanathur police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the circumstances, including the allegations made by Harish’s family and the claims raised in the online dispute.

The investigation is ongoing. Any conclusions about the circumstances of the death or the role of other individuals will depend on the evidence gathered by the authorities.

Concerns Over Online Harassment

The case has drawn attention to the potential impact of online harassment and public accusations on people who maintain a presence on social media platforms. Disagreements over financial content, professional credentials and online conduct can attract widespread attention, making responsible communication and evidence-based allegations important.

The case also highlights the need to distinguish between allegations made on social media and conclusions established through an official investigation.
