Blood Moon 2025: Total Lunar Eclipse Captivates Madurai

Madurai is experiencing a rare celestial wonder tonight with the appearance of the Blood Moon, a total lunar eclipse that has captivated sky watchers around the world. The event began at 9:58 PM and will continue until 1:00 AM, with the most breathtaking phase occurring between 11:00 PM and 12:22 AM, when the moon takes on its dramatic red hue.

To make the phenomenon more accessible to the public, the Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF) has organized viewing sessions at the Thaikkal–Sellur bridge over the Vaigai River, where telescopes and binoculars are available for families, students, and astronomy enthusiasts. The initiative has turned the night into a festive gathering, with many enjoying “selfie-with-the-Blood-Moon” moments under the starry sky.

The cultural and spiritual rhythms of Madurai are also tied to this astronomical event. The Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and 22 associated shrines were closed from 12:30 PM today in observance of traditional practices linked to the eclipse. These temples will reopen for devotees on Monday morning, once the celestial event has concluded.

With its mix of science, tradition, and community participation, the Blood Moon of 2025 has added a unique chapter to Madurai’s cultural calendar, reminding residents of the city’s timeless connection between the cosmic and the spiritual.
